Try Expressive Writing about your Reintergration Difficulty

Before You Begin

Please write for 20 minutes each day on four separate days. Find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed. Try to find a place where you can be alone while you write. Feel free to set an alarm for 20 minutes to help you keep track of time.

The instructions are the same for all four days of writing. You may write about the same reintegration issues or experiences that you wrote about on a previous day or you may write about different ones each time.

When you are writing, don't worry about spelling, grammar, or repeating yourself. The only rule is that once you begin writing, just continue to write until your time is up. If you run out of things to say, just repeat what you have already written. If you aren't sure what to write about, just start writing and you will find that you have more to say than you thought you would!

Expressive Writing Instructions (same on all four days)

For the next 20-minutes, write about resuming civilian life after your military deployment. Try to explore your deepest thoughts and feelings about your transition to civilian life, including the challenges you are currently facing and the reasons for these challenges. In your writing, you might address issues dealing with your deployment or relationships with fellow service members. Many people also write about their friends, lovers, family members, and other relationships. Feel free to link your reintegration to events from your past, your present, or your future; to who you have been, who you are now, or who you would like to be. The important thing is that in your writing you allow yourself to explore your deepest thoughts and feelings.

While you write, remember:
  • Write for 20 minutes without interruption or distraction.
  • Explore your deepest thoughts and feelings.
  • Do not correct your writing! Spelling, grammar, and writing style do not matter.
