EAGAN, MN — Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 23 Director; Ms. Janet Murphy, retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs after 17 years of federal service on May 29, 2018.

Ms. Murphy was appointed Network Director for the VA Midwest Health Care Network VISN 23 on August 29, 2010. In this position, she served as the senior official for the Veterans Health Administration in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and portions of the bordering states of Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. 

Ms. Murphy served as the Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management (DUSHOM) for the Department of Veterans Affairs three times: (November 12, 2013- March 31, 2014; June 2014- August 6, 2016 and January 2015- June 2016).  In this role, Ms. Murphy provided executive leadership and direction for the Office of Patient Centered Care, Office of the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management for Administrative Operations, Office of the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management for Clinical Operations and 21 (now 18) Veterans Integrated Service Network Offices. 

Ms. Murphy joined the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2001 and was responsible for primary and specialty medicine including; development of innovative programs to address disease management and population health, expansion of access to rural health, planning and development of Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and strategies to reduce variation in health care cost and delivery.  Prior to her career with the VHA she was an Associate Hospital Director for Community Primary Care for the Community Health Network of San Francisco/San Francisco General Hospital and served in a variety of positions with the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Ms. Murphy has over 36 years of health care leadership experience.  She received several awards throughout her career in the Department.  In May 2016, she was a recipient of the Secretary’s Exceptional Service award and Under Secretary for Health’s Commendation award.
